Your company travels with you. The EIN should not take three months.
You set up a US LLC so you could invoice clients and get paid from anywhere. Until it has an EIN it cannot open a bank account, take card payments, or file its first IRS form. Doing it yourself means a fax machine and a phone call during New York office hours, from wherever you happen to be. 99% of our orders are done in 72 hours or less.
- ✓ No SSN, no ITIN, no fixed address
- ✓ Delivered by email, not by post
- ✓ Works from any time zone
Typical IRS processing for applicants without an SSN or ITIN, who cannot use the IRS online tool. Measured from payment to the 147c letter in your inbox.
Why this step is worse for you than for everyone else
The EIN application was designed around someone with a Social Security Number, a US address, and a fax machine in the office. You have none of the three, and the process has no interest in that.
- ✓The fast route is closed to youThe IRS online tool asks for the responsible party's SSN or ITIN and refuses to continue without one. Every non-resident is pushed onto fax, post, or the phone.
- ✓Your post does not follow youThe IRS mails the CP 575 notice to the LLC address, which for most nomads is a virtual mailbox. That is 3 to 4 weeks before scanning and forwarding even begins. The 147c letter reaches you by email instead.
- ✓The IRS keeps New York hoursThe international line runs during US business hours, which is the middle of the night from Bali, Chiang Mai or Tbilisi, and the hold time is often measured in hours.
- ✓Everything else is waiting on itMercury, Wise Business, Relay, Stripe and PayPal all ask for the EIN and an IRS document before they will onboard the company. Until then the LLC cannot receive a single payment.
What lands in your inbox
The IRS EIN verification letter, Form 147c, as a scan of the fax we receive from the IRS. It shows your EIN, the LLC's legal name and the address on file, on IRS letterhead.
The number is the real thing. We do not issue it, the IRS does. We prepare Form SS-4 and file it as your third party designee, the mechanism printed on the IRS form itself. The EIN is assigned to your company permanently and is identical to the one you would get by faxing the form yourself.

Questions nomads ask
I move between countries every few months. Does that break the application?
No. The application asks for two addresses: the LLC's mailing address, which is usually your registered agent or virtual mailbox, and the responsible party's address, which is simply where you live now. Neither has to be permanent, and neither has to be in the United States. If you move before the letter arrives, nothing needs to change, because we send the 147c to your email.
I am not tax resident anywhere at the moment. Can I still get an EIN?
Yes. The EIN belongs to the company, not to you, and the IRS does not ask where you are tax resident when it assigns one. What your own tax position is, and where you owe anything, is a question for a tax advisor who knows your situation. We prepare and file the application, nothing more.
Do I need a US address or a US phone number?
The LLC needs a US mailing address, which almost every non-resident solves with a registered agent or a virtual mailbox. You personally do not. Your home address can be anywhere in the world, and the phone number you give us can be any country code.
Everyone says to just call the IRS. Why not do that?
You can. The IRS international line is open during US business hours, which is the middle of the night across most of Asia, and the wait is often measured in hours. You need the completed SS-4 in front of you and you need the call not to drop. Plenty of people get through eventually. We do this every day, which is the only real difference.
What actually arrives, and where?
The IRS EIN verification letter, Form 147c, as a scan of the fax we receive from the IRS, sent to your email. That is the document banks and payment providers accept. The IRS also posts a paper notice (CP 575) to the LLC address, which typically takes 3 to 4 weeks and tends to sit in a virtual mailbox. You do not need to wait for it.
